Difference between Bow and Bay Windows

Posted on September 22, 2020
difference between bow and bay windows

When shopping for new windows, you will notice that there are many different styles and designs. Two popular options are bay and bow windows. While these windows have a number of similarities, there are also some significant differences. Understanding these differences will help you make the best choice. Here are some of the main ways in which bay and bow windows differ.

  • Bow windows are known to have four or five openings that can be angled. Bay windows, on the other hand, have three openings. Normally, the middle window will be straight or flat with the windows on either side being angled.
  • Bow windows, because of the extra openings, have a more rounded appearance compared to bay windows. This means that they have a distinctly different appearance even if you are not sure how to tell them apart at first.
  • Bow and bay windows are both excellent for most homes, regardless of the style or decorative theme. Bay windows, however, are often chosen for modern or contemporary themes while bow windows help create a more vintage look. Take note of the theme of the room and your home before choosing between these two.
  • Both styles help increase the amount of floor space in the room. However, bay windows extend further outside of the room than bow windows. So, if you want to set aside a place for your piano, for instance, a bay window might be the better option.
  • Bay windows have at least one extra window which means that they will allow more natural light into the room.
  • In height, the two designs are pretty much the same. As for width, this is where they differ more significantly. Take note of the furniture in the room before choosing new windows. You might like to create a reading nook or special seating area.
  • Bow windows are especially great for installing on the corner of a room. This will really help open up the room and you will get to enjoy an even more impressive view.
  • More glass and materials are needed for making bow windows. For this reason, it’s easy to understand why they usually cost more than bay windows.

No matter which of these two designs you choose, you can be sure that it will make the room look and feel more spacious. Make sure that you pair these windows with the right window coverings in order to really emphasize the theme that you are trying to create.
