The Best Window Types for Bathrooms

Posted on December 7, 2020
best window types for bathrooms

Choosing the right window for your bathroom can be quite tricky. There are a number of factors to consider including intimacy, light, ventilation and size. Here are a few of the best designs to keep in mind when the time comes to install a new bathroom window.

Crank Windows

Casement and awning windows both function with a crank system. This means that they can be opened as much or as little as needed. Casement style crank windows have hinges on the side while awning windows have hinges on top.

Awning windows are often more popular because they tend to offer more privacy than casement windows even while open. Crank windows, unlike many other designs, do not have weather stripping. Instead, they have a compression seal where the frame and sash meet. This ensures an airtight seal which is excellent for energy efficiency.

Awning Combination

One of the potential downsides of an awning window is the fact that it might not allow in quite as much light as you’d like. For this reason, many people choose an awning combination. In other words, a fixed window is installed above the movable awning window.

This allows light to flow in through the top of the room and you can open the lower awning window for ventilation. The upper window is just about at the top of the wall which also means that privacy is not compromised by adding an extra window.

Slider Window

These windows are not considered to be as efficient as casement or awning windows but they can still prove to be a great choice. Especially if you are on a tight budget and you are looking for a window replacement that won’t break the bank. If you choose this type of window for your bathroom, remember to ask about additional energy efficiency features such as Low-E coatings which will help prevent your home from excessive heat loss in the winter.

Multiple Windows

While you most likely need at least one window that can open and allow fresh air to enter your bathroom, this does not mean that you cannot install one or more additional fixed windows. These fixed windows will help open up the room and make it appear larger. It will also allow more light to enter the room which is always a bonus. Natural light is not only great for ladies who wish to do their hair and makeup. It’s also important for the mental well-being of everyone in the home.

Privacy Glass

Before choosing any type of window, make sure that your supplier is able to offer some form of privacy glass. This glass is important because it obscures the view of anyone on the other side of the window. The last thing anyone wants is to forget the bathroom curtains open by accident! When you have privacy glass, you do not even need to install window coverings in your bathroom since the glass will take care of any potential nosy onlookers.
