Single Hung vs Double Hung Windows, Which One to Choose?

Posted on December 7, 2020
single hung vs double hung windows

If you are looking for new windows for your home, you will most likely come across several designs. Two of the most popular options are single and double hung windows. While similar in a number of ways, there are some distinct differences between these two designs. Making the right choice will largely depend on your personal preferences and needs. Here’s what you need to know about these two types of windows in order to make an informed decision.

What’s the Difference?

A single hung window consists of two window sashes. The top sash is fixed in place which means that it does not move. The lower sash moves up and down. Double hung windows, however, consist of two sashes and both of them can move. The top sash moves down while the bottom one moves up.

Ventilation

One of the most important roles of any window is to allow for proper ventilation. Even during the coldest months of the year, we still need to allow fresh air into every room of our homes. Not only is it important for our health, but also to keep mildew at bay and remove any odors that can accumulate while the windows are tightly shut.

Double hung windows are sometimes preferred because they offer more flexibility in terms of ventilation. You can choose to open the top, bottom or both if you like. Single hung windows can only be opened from the bottom.

Price Considerations

Since double hung windows have double the sliding mechanisms, they involve more moving parts and, therefore, they will cost somewhat more. If you are looking for the cheapest possible option, single hung windows will prove more budget-friendly.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is important for all homeowners and this is why it is so important to choose windows that help climate-proof your property. The better they seal your home from the impact of outside elements, the less your heating and cooling systems will need to work throughout the year to keep your home comfortable. The more movable sashes, the greater the chances of air and water infiltration.

Of course, if you purchase quality windows from a reputable supplier, you can rest assured that even double hung windows will offer just as much insulation as single hung varieties. Make sure that the windows you choose have the Energy Star label and are backed by a warranty too.

Maintaining your Windows

Nobody enjoys cleaning windows but it is a necessary part of home care and maintenance. Double hung windows are often considered to be easier to clean since there are two movable sashes. That said, the more moving parts there are, the more wear and tear can occur and affect your window. So, there are two ways of looking at the extra movable sash.
